PROJECT BREAKDOWN
- Large product portfolio: Britvic Soft Drinks owns popular brands, including Robinsons, Tango, and J2O, and operates multiple manufacturing facilities across the UK.
- High production volume: Its largest site, located in Rugby, is one of Europe’s biggest soft drinks factories by production volume.
- £50 million of investment into site expansion: The site continues to expand, supported by over £50 million of investment to increase production and distribution capacity.
To support growing demand, Britvic commissioned the construction of a new can-line building. The project was awarded to Morris & Spottiswood as principal contractor, and STOCKTON GROUP was subsequently appointed by Morris & Spottiswood to deliver the civil engineering works for the new can-line facility. This scope included extensive infrastructure works such as drainage installations, reinforced concrete structures, and foundations.
DRAINAGE SYSTEM INSTALLED
The works included the installation of a comprehensive internal and external drainage system, comprising stormwater and effluent drainage, a downstream defender chamber, a flow control chamber, and stainless steel, twin-wall, and OSMA pipework, along with precast concrete manhole chambers.
This drainage system was necessary to manage surface water and effluent effectively, prevent flooding, and protect the new infrastructure and surrounding areas.
Reinforced concrete works and foundations
The works encompassed reinforced concrete and foundation construction, including RC slabs for large nitrogen storage tanks, RC pads for Calor gas tank housing, and concrete beam foundations with pile caps on concrete piles.
Damp proof membranes (DPM) also had to be installed within the RC foundations to prevent dampness, mould and structural damage, while ensuring long-term durability and integrity.
The project also involved building retaining walls and upstands to provide essential structural support, an internal floor slab with varying falls, and wall insulation installation to ensure long-term durability and protection. Externally, works included footpath construction and highway reinstatement,
Health and safety compliance
Stockton’s internal Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) auditor conducted regular site visits to monitor compliance with health and safety standards. The project consistently achieved full adherence to all Health and Safety procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel throughout the duration of the works.
