In our latest blog, we’re speaking to Contracts Manager, Jordan Coulson, from our Civils division about how he keeps work running to schedule, ensuring continued client satisfaction.
Jordan’s role at Stockton Group
Having been with Stockton since 2023, Jordan Coulson is Contracts Manager for our Civils division. He makes sure projects stay on track, and that every piece of work is delivered at the standard that not only our clients expect, but that our senior leadership team drives every day.
Here, he talks about his role, achievements, and life outside of work.
What past industry experience have you carried into your role at Stockton?
I’ve held a number of roles, including Site Engineer, Site Manager, and Project Manager, before my current role as Contracts Manager. This has given me experience across each aspect of a site, which is useful when I’m leading teams to complete projects, as I understand the pressures being faced from the ground up.
On the qualifications side, I hold a Higher National Diploma (HND), NVQ Level 6 in Contracting Operations, National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH), Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS), plus a first aid qualification, which gives me all the requirements I need to confidently lead on sites. Continued personal development is an important aspect in an industry like civil engineering, which keeps changing and moving at pace.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
There’s not really a typical workday for me, which makes the role enjoyable. It varies based on client and site requirements, but the key is always keeping strong communication between our teams and management.
What’s the most challenging project you’ve worked on at Stockton, and what did you learn from it?
York Racecourse. There were design challenges throughout, and the programme was tight from day one, as everything had to be finished and ready before the racing season got underway. It was a great project to learn from, however, in terms of adapting and overcoming challenges.
Which project are you most proud of?
York Racecourse again. The team worked hard to overcome the challenges and deliver the project successfully, and it was brilliant to see the end result.
What would you say are the main reasons why clients choose Stockton over other firms?
At Stockton we pride ourselves in going over and above to be a can-do contractor, we work with our clients closely to ensure we deliver a quality project on time, and that’s been evidenced in all of our work over the past few years, whether it’s in Civils or Drilling.
What are your main aims for the next six months in your role at Stockton?
I want to continue developing our team and successfully delivering the projects we have currently, whilst securing future projects with new and current clients.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
You cannot change what's been, only learn from it.
What’s been your biggest achievement, personally and professionally?
Personally - my children and seeing them grow to be loving and caring little beings!
Professionally - the delivery of every successful project. Each project we hand over feels like a great achievement.
Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
I enjoy spending time away with the family, especially in a warmer climate! I also enjoy watching the rugby and running.
