To support the redevelopment of hospitality and external areas at the southern end of York Racecourse, Lindum Group commissioned a comprehensive civils works package ahead of the 2024 race season

STOCKTON GROUP was appointed to deliver the works, providing the substructure, reinforced concrete works, drainage infrastructure, service ducting, and hard landscaping. The project demanded precise sequencing and forward planning to accommodate tight schedule constraints and high volumes of concurrent site activity.

SCOPE OF WORK

SCOPE OF WORK

The core of the project centred on substructure and reinforced concrete works. This included construction of foundations and concrete floor slabs for the new Roberto Bar, installation of the Theakston Bar extension, and preparation of the external lawn canopy area.

A full drainage strategy was also implemented across the site, which incorporated attenuation, soakaway and rainwater harvesting tanks, alongside new internal and external drainage connections. Service ducting and chambers were also installed to accommodate all utility providers and future infrastructure needs.

External works formed a key part of the scheme and included hard landscaping, installation of natural stone demarcations, stepped access points, linear drainage channels, grass steps, and remedial works to existing stands and outbuildings.

Project Summary

Full civils package delivered on behalf of Lindum
Construction of foundations and concrete slabs for new hospitality facilities
Installation of drainage network including attenuation, soakaway, and harvesting tanks

Project Breakdown

Tight schedule constraints

Works were sequenced carefully to meet fixed completion deadlines ahead of the 2024 race calendar.

High-volume site operations

Multiple trades operating concurrently required disciplined coordination and structured planning.

Ground level and retaining requirements

Level variations across the southern end of the racecourse required retaining structures and careful ground management.

PROJECT BREAKDOWN

STOCKTON GROUP delivered the full civils package on behalf of Lindum, supporting the creation of new hospitality facilities and associated infrastructure at one of the UK’s leading race venues.

The works provided the structural foundations, drainage network and external environment needed to bring the redevelopment to life while ensuring the racecourse remained operational and ready for the 2024 season.

PROJECT BREAKDOWN

DRAINAGE AND SERVICE INFRASTRUCTURE

The works included reduce level excavation and installation of attenuation and storage tanks, alongside internal and external drainage connections across the development footprint.

A coordinated service ducting network was installed, complete with chambers for asset providers, ensuring utilities could be integrated efficiently within the wider redevelopment.

Groundwater ingress during excavation created programme and safety pressures., These were managed through adaptive working methods and close collaboration with the principal contractor, allowing progress to continue while maintaining site standards

REINFORCED CONCRETE AND FOUNDATION WORKS

Substructure works were delivered for the Roberto Bar, Theakston Bar extension, and external canopy structures, including installation of reinforced concrete foundations and floor slabs.

Careful sequencing was essential due to overlapping trades and programme pressures. Through forward planning and flexible construction approaches, the works were completed to specification and aligned with the fixed completion date for the 2024 race season.

HEALTH, SAFETY, AND ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE

High levels of site activity and constrained working areas required strict adherence to HSEQ procedures throughout the project. Stockton worked closely with Lindum to manage site safety, maintain clear communication, and ensure compliance at every stage.

Despite the technical complexity and scheduling pressures, the project was delivered safely and to the required quality standards.
